South African opposition sees opportunity in divided ANC’s corruption

DA leader Mmusi Maimane seeks to exploit frustration with Jacob Zuma’s ‘dead’ party

With the ruling African National Congress riddled with allegations of corruption and infighting, and its black supporters fed up with high unemployment, a stuttering economy and a lack of basic services, the opposition Democratic Alliance  — until now overwhelmingly supported by non-black voters — scents its best chance of breaking the ANC’s stranglehold on power, The Financial Times reports.

But the DA is struggling to present an attractive alternative to the ANC, it adds

“The DA is not influencing the narrative,” said Ralph Mathekga, a political analyst. “The opposition is so caught up in the ANC’s internal divisions” that it has fallen behind on generating clear alternative policies.
