European Foundation for Democracy – five years on

Democracy advocates are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), which has transferred over 36 million euro to projects in support of over 570 initiatives in neighboring states of the European Union, from Belarus and Ukraine to Syria and Egypt.

The Endowment was established in the wake of the “Arab Spring” with the aim of responding faster and more flexibly to democratic openings than the EU’s standard instruments allowed, drawing on the experience of the US-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
