Foundations of Poland’s democracy being dismantled, says Walesa

Lech Walesa, the hero of Poland’s uprising against communism, has warned that the country’s right-wing ruling party is dismantling the foundations of democracy and seeking “a return to the Middle Ages” on the eve of tomorrow’s presidential election.

In an interview with The Times, the Nobel peace prize laureate also said that the European Union would “disintegrate” unless it fought back against populist governments in Poland and Hungary.

Mr Walesa said that the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has been in power for five years, had undermined the rule of law so much that it was “unfit” to govern and should face criminal prosecution for violating the constitution. “They have committed so many idiocies, crimes and breaches of the law they are…” RTWT
